Nail disorders refer to conditions that affect your nail unit due to injury or disease. Your nails are made from a hard protein known as keratin, which is also found in your skin and hair.

Types of nail disorders

There are many different types of nail disorders and nail diseases, all of which need to be addressed differently depending on the cause, symptoms, and severity.

Nail Disorders
Common nail disorders include:

  • Bruised nails – Appear as a dark, purplish spot caused by a blood clot under the nail plate. Usually caused by trauma
  • Beau’s lines – Appear as depressions across the width of an otherwise healthy nail. They usually occur following a major injury or illness
  • Hangnail – Where the skin around the nail plate splits and tears, usually due to small cuts or dry skin

  • Melanonychia
  • Leukonychia spots
  • Onychorrhexis
  • Ridges
  • Pincer nail
  • Splinter hemorrhages
  • Onychophagy
  • Pitting nails
  • Onycholysis
  • Psoriatic nail changes
  • Onychomycosis (fungal nail infection).
  • Melanoma
